“No one listens to the generations of the constitution”

By Mujë Buçpapaj Sali Berisha's press conference yesterday continued to focus on the protest of the medical students in Tirana, an alarming expression of the grave condition in which all Albanian students find themselves today, a condition dramatically precipitated and even encouraged by the very actions or inaction of the socialist government. All its promises have failed shamefully, therefore the current regime has understood that in these circumstances nothing remains except deception and intimidation, the latter increased also by the entry of SHIK into universities. This illegal and open activity against students is linked to the other essential fact, that this government is exercising unprecedented psychological and political violence, punishing students at a decisive moment for them, irresponsibly and leaving them at the mercy of fate. According to Mr. Berisha, the main reason for this protest is the economic misery of the students. According to him, besides the immediate need to pay study fees and grants, the problems are of catastrophic proportions. The students' demands are legitimate and must be heard very carefully, Mr. Berisha said at yesterday's press conference. According to him, this government should seriously support the students' protest because the youth are the future of the country. Mr. Berisha said this is the height of irresponsibility of the socialist government, which spends large sums on political propaganda while students have no bread. Turning to the draft constitution, Mr. Berisha said that the current constitution would close the door to democratic institutions, free elections and the rule of law. According to him, this is a constitution that does not embody national consensus and cannot be voted on by a divided people. He called on citizens not to fall prey to deception and to judge carefully the consequences of this project.
